Traction Chair Therapy for Neck Pain

Sit back, and let the chair do the slow work.

TRACTION CHAIR THERAPY FOR NECK PAIN

The traction chair is a reclining chair that gently stretches the spine in slow cycles while you sit back and relax. It eases pressure along the spine and calms muscles that have been guarding since your injury, and it often comes right before neck decompression.

Your physician decides on this treatment and picks its strength. You only get it when it is on your orders.

How does it help?

Gentle stretching, repeated, gives the joints and discs a little room and lets muscles that have been braced for weeks finally let go. That makes the more focused neck decompression that follows easier to relax into.

What does it feel like?

A slow stretch and release along your spine. The chair begins on its gentlest setting and climbs in single steps, stopping at the level your physician wrote. You get a check-in from your technician at the 2-minute point and again at the halfway mark.

Who should not have it?

  • A broken bone your physician has not cleared
  • Thin, weak bones (osteoporosis)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis affecting the neck
  • Pregnancy
  • Numbness or weakness that keeps getting worse
  • Spine surgery in the recent past

Before each visit, your technician asks the safety questions out loud. If anything has changed since last time, a physician decides before the treatment starts. Say the word and we stop, any time.

How long does it take?

About 15 minutes.

What to remember

  1. It starts low and builds one step at a time.
  2. Stretch, never pain.
  3. Tell us at once about any new numbness or tingling.

Show us you have it: Practice the exact phrase you will say if the stretch begins to hurt. At your next visit we go over it again, and we are glad to repeat any step you want to see twice.

Other treatments in the program

This is one part of our physiotherapy program for neck pain. Every treatment here is ordered and overseen by a physician who has examined your neck, and none begins until a physician is on site and ready to step in at once.

Find out whether this treatment fits your neck

A physician examines you first and writes the orders. Bring any scans and a list of what makes your neck or arm worse.
